“Fire safety upgrades to achieve Building Regulation compliance”

The Leadership team at Lees Primary school cares deeply for their local community. This is evident in their efforts to provide their pupils with a safe, warm and dry environment for learning and development and their staff with a place to teach and care.  It is with this mindset that Lees Primary School engaged Stratus9 Consulting, as their consultant of choice, to address Health & Safety and backlog maintenance issues within the school.  Stratus9 quickly identified the need to address urgent fire safety compliance issues which if left unchecked introduced unacceptable risks to life safety in the event of a fire.

It was found upon inspection by Stratus9 that previous construction works had created breaches in the fire compartmentation of the building fabric which would restrict the building’s ability to inhibit the movement of smoke and fire in its event.  Also, due to the age of the building the majority of doors and glazed partitions did not meet current fire safety regulations and required replacement.  Stratus9 designed and managed a project to replace all non-compliant fire doors and glazed partitions along with remediating breaches in fire compartmentation to ensure the school was compliant with current building regulations.

The school now benefits from a full appointment of certified fire doors and screens that are aesthetically in keeping with the historic building.  Despite the removal of a considerable amount of asbestos the project came in well under budget and on time allowing the school to maintain operational capability within term time. The completed project has also provided added value through enhanced environmental conditions which benefit pupils, staff and visitors.
